Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Then the police in the remote rural community of Canaan, the place he calls home, find an ‘89 Monte Carlo abandoned by the side of the road. And the beautiful teenage girl who owned the car seems to have disappeared without a trace. Soon, Rath is drawn into an investigation that will bring him face-to-face with the darkest abominations of the human soul.
With the secrets of his violent and painful past nipping at his heels, and young women with secrets vanishing one by one, Rath will learn that even the smallest towns on the map can’t hide from the Devil. Because the Devil…he’s everywhere

Read an excerpt:

The child stepped into the house and shut the door with a soft click. Its face hovered above the woman's. The woman reached up, clutched the mask's rubbery skin. Pulled. The mask would not come off. She dug her fingers in. Clawed. The mask stretched. The knife sliced. She tore at the mask, gasping. The child had been right. Monsters did exist.

Eric Rickstad’s taut, chilling literary crime novels strip back the bucolic veneer of rural America and root around in its tragic underbelly. His short stories and articles have appeared in many magazines and been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He holds an MFA from the University of Virginia where he was a Hoyns Fellow and a Corse Fellow. Catch Up With the Author:

My Thoughts
The Silent Girls is one of those stories that grabs you from the beginning and keeps you wanting more. A very creepy murder mystery. Young women are missing and turning up dead which is bad enough but Frank Rath is tormented with these deaths. Why? His sister and brother in law were murdered many years ago and the case had not been solved. He took in and adopted his little niece who was in the house when the murders occurred. Abortion is always a touchy topic and I think the author took on this topic with empathy and used as the underlying plot of the story is admirable. I loved the pace of the story and just the way it was written reminded me of a good British mystery, even though it was not. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story with believable characters and settings.

I received the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for review.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

"These days I can honestly say I never know where author Dan O'Brien is going to take readers. Over the books I have read he has transported readers into the lives of characters that definitely stick to you, pushing forward from chapter to chapter, unable to stop until the very end––and even then you don't seem to be able to get enough. That's author Dan O'Brien for you: he draws you in, gives you just enough to hook you, and then shows who really has the power by leaving you anxiously awaiting what he has in store for us next. If MOBSTERS, MONSTERS & NAZIS is any indication, this series will be another project in the win column for this talented storyteller.” ––Cyrus Webb, host of Conversations LIVE radio show

Author Dan O'Brien has teamed up with artist Steve Ferchaud for a one-of-a-kind reading experience that will span six short books. Blending noir, hardboiled detective stories, and pulp comics, "Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis" follows private investigator Derrick Diamond as he searches for an elusive object: a strange device that the Nazis need for their nefarious experiments. Aided by Ava Harpy, a lounge singer at the Yellow Monarch, they dive deep into the underbelly of the city, uncovering a sordid plot that is much larger than they could have possibly imagined.

Now, it might not be a "time travel highlander romance," but it is the first in a series of kindle ebooks that might will surprise you at every turn. I can promise it's a modern pulp story with the usual suspects of pulp heroes and villains. It also manages to satisfy all those readers who enjoy a little cthulhu mythos in the mix.

If you love illustrated works, pulp comics, and a little bit of Lovecraft in your stories, then what are you waiting for?

MORE REVIEWS:

“This is one of the best introductions to a book that I have ever read, you are saddened when it ends and are hooked into wanting to know what happens next. Fans of the movies starring Humphrey Bogart will spot many references to his classics. A story in this genre is difficult to execute, but this is convincing evidence that O’Brien has done it.” – Charles Ashbacher

"This is a fun and original story with fabulous illustrations and the potential to be a thrilling adventure. The world O’Brien has created––blending otherworldly creatures with very familiar noir-style tropes––is deliciously creepy and undeniably interesting. This one is definitely worth picking up.” ––Kathy Cunningham

Bob byTegon Maus Spotlight With Excerpt!

Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing (September 5, 2014)

Category: Soft Science Fiction
Available in: ebook,  Aprox. 165 Pages

After 27 years as a newspaper man, Peter Anderson’s career is slipping away… at least it was... until he stumbled upon the story of a lifetime.
Sent to do a fluff piece about lights in the night sky over Arizona, he discovers far more than he ever expected when he comes upon a mysterious young woman held prisoner in a basement.   After helping her to escape she disappears before he can learn the truth about who she is or where she came from.
His search for her leads him back to the lights in the sky and leaves him with more questions than answers.   The only thing he knows for certain… the only thing he can count on are the two words offered repeatedly by his friend and guide…. “IS BELT.”

Praise for Tegon Maus's 'Bob':
"After twenty seven years in the business, who wouldn’t want an exclusive story, especially when “It’s the BIG one?” The one which answers questions which has been asked my millions.
“Are there really aliens out there, and have they ever visited Earth?”

Well, journalist Peter Anderson is given the opportunity to find the answers to these questions, a journalists dream. However first he must travel to Payson, Arizona and interview Professor Donald Thorpe, luckily the doorman at the hotel has a ‘friend’ who can drive him. Meet Dimitri Rurik Petrova otherwise known as Bob!

The Professor says he has proof that the lights in the sky are real, and, what Peter sees that day, changes his life forever.

Soon, Peter and Bob find themselves rescuing Emma, a beautiful woman they discover being horribly tortured in a basement.

Then the fun begins as we discover the answers to many questions. If you’ve always wondered about those lights in the desert, if little green men have visited earth, and if spaceships exist the answers could be here….

Whether or not you believe the outcome, there is no denying that you will have great fun reading this very enjoyable science fiction story. It has all the essential components, good characters, a great plot and plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, right up until the end."-
Susan Keefe, Book Reviews by Susan Keefe

"This is a cute science fiction piece that can't be put down until the last "cousin" is discovered. Bob is so zany and endearing one can't help but to love him in spite of his nefarious ways.
This adventure moves very quickly, so one must keep on their toes to keep up with the action. This novel starts off as the typical lights in the sky story, but quickly morphs into an entirely unique tale of good and evil and the reader is kept on the edge of their seat waiting to see what happens next. The end is completely unexpected but completely hilarious. Anyone into sci-fi or comedy would enjoy this delightful little gem that is worth reading again and again."- Belinda Wilson, Amazon Reviewer

"The characters in this novella were well-developed and memorable. I was especially interested in seeing what was going on with Bob because Mr. Maus dropped some tantalizing clues about him early on. Bob’s tendency to understate important things and overstate the trivial stuff was as as it was descriptive of who he is as a man. He and Peter had personalities that were about as diametrically opposed to one another as you can get, so it was amusing to see how they interacted in stressful situations. Peter was a little harder to read, but I soon came to appreciate his calmer and more reserved approach to life as the plot thickened.

One of the things I enjoy the most about Mr. Maus’ writing style is how much energy he puts into describing his settings in great detail without slowing down the plot at all. Instead he sprinkled mesmerizing imagery into everything else that was going on. Sometimes the descriptions were funny. Other times they were eerie or mind-boggling. Peter visited some truly incredible places during the course of this tale, and I felt like I experienced them alongside him.

Bob was a wild ride. This is a great choice for anyone who likes speculating about the real origins of Unidentified Flying Objects."

About Tegon Maus:
I was raised pretty much the same as everyone else... devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure. Not that I wasn't friendly, I just wasn't "people orientated". Maybe I lived in my head way more than I should have, maybe not. I liked machines more than people, at least I did until I met my wife.
The first thing I can remember writing was for her. For the life of me I can't remember what it was about... something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years after inventing games and prototypes for a variety of ideas before I got back to writing.
It wasn't a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. My wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. "Be as detailed as you can," we were told.
I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it's making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn't be sure if it were true or not.  When I write, I always write with the effort of "it could happen" very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing, makes me happier.
I have consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and I have been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Cherringham, A Cozy Crime Series by Costello and Neil Richards Review!

Cherringham is a quiet and peaceful town in the Cotswolds. Time moves slowly here, and nothing out of the ordinary ever happens, until one morning a woman’s body is discovered in the river. Sarah Edwards has just returned to Cherringham with her two children following the breakdown of her marriage. Sarah had been friends with Sammi Jackson – the woman in the river –before they both moved to London and she’s certain there is more to her death than meets the eye. But juggling the school run and her job as a web designer doesn’t leave much time to solve murder mysteries.

After the death of his wife, former NYPD homicide detective Jack Brennan has retired to Cherringham hoping for a quiet life. He soon realises “peace and quiet” isn’t really him and, despite his misgivings, he’s persuaded by Sarah to help her look into Sammi’s death. It quickly becomes clear that the case isn’t as simple as the police hope. From her violent ex-boyfriend to her alcoholic father, it seems everyone has something to hide. Sarah and Jack will need to use all their wits to get to the bottom of this case.

"Cherringham - A Cozy Crime Series" is a series of twelve self-contained episodes. A new case for Jack and Sarah is released each month.

My Thoughts

Cherringham is an episodic series of twelve books which are released each month. I love British mysteries and this one was no exception. Both characters, Sarah and Jack have baggage, as everyone does, but their pasts did not bog down the story. These two are working together to solve the death of a woman found in the river, who was also a friend of Sarah's. A very well written start to I think will be an great atmospheric series. I look forward to reading more of these episodes!

I received a copy for review and was not monetarily compensated for said review.

Always Watching by Chevy Stevens Review!

 Book Details

  • Paperback: 368 pages
  • Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin; Reprint edition (May 6, 2014)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1250049008
  • ISBN-13: 978-1250049001

In her recent novel, Always Watching, Chevy Stevens tackles an interesting topic, cult life. I have always been intrigued by cults and the reasons why people join them and this book provides a great insight, albeit fictional, into the world of cults.

Goodreads provides this description of Always Watching:

She helps people put their demons to rest.

But she has a few of her own…

In the lockdown ward of a psychiatric hospital, Dr. Nadine Lavoie is in her element. She has the tools to help people, and she has the desire—healing broken families is what she lives for. But Nadine doesn’t want to look too closely at her own past because there are whole chunks of her life that are black holes. It takes all her willpower to tamp down her recurrent claustrophobia, and her daughter, Lisa, is a runaway who has been on the streets for seven years.

When a distraught woman, Heather Simeon, is brought into the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit after a suicide attempt, Nadine gently coaxes her story out of her—and learns of some troubling parallels with her own life. Digging deeper, Nadine is forced to confront her traumatic childhood, and the damage that began when she and her brother were brought by their mother to a remote commune on Vancouver Island. What happened to Nadine? Why was their family destroyed? And why does the name Aaron Quinn, the group’s leader, bring complex feelings of terror to Nadine even today?

And then, the unthinkable happens, and Nadine realizes that danger is closer to home than she ever imagined. She has no choice but to face what terrifies her the most…and fight back.

Sometimes you can leave the past, but you can never escape.

I have only read two novels by Chevy Stevens and this one is pretty interesting. Stevens takes on and interprets the “cult” life pretty well in Always Watching. The story kept my interest but it did not captivate me as much as the other novel of hers I read called That Night. Perhaps because the plotline was drawn out a bit, as the main character Nadine tries to wrestle her own demons about her experience in the cult life. Or perhaps the ending was too predictable? I gave this book a solid 3-stars on Goodreads. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Chevy Stevens fan or a fan of mystery.

Sinful Folk by Ned Hayes / Nikki McClure Review!

Formats: eBook, Hardcover, Audiobook

Genre: Historical Fiction/Mystery/Medieval
Add to GR Button

A tragic loss. A desperate journey. A mother seeks the truth.
In December of 1377, four children were burned to death in a house fire. Villagers traveled hundreds of miles across England to demand justice for their children’s deaths.
Sinful Folk is the story of this terrible mid-winter journey as seen by Mear, a former nun who has lived for a decade disguised as a mute man, raising her son quietly in this isolated village. For years, she has concealed herself and all her history. But on this journey, she will find the strength to redeem the promise of her past. Mear begins her journey in terror and heartache, and ends in triumph and transcendence.
The remarkable new novel by Ned Hayes, illustrated by New York Times bestselling author/illustrator Nikki McClure, Sinful Folkilluminates the medieval era with profound insight and compassion.

Praise for Sinful Folk

In December of 1377, five children are burned in a suspicious house fire. Awash in paranoia and prejudice, the fathers suspect it is the work of Jews and set out to seek justice from the king, loading the charred bodies of their boys onto a cart. Unbeknownst to them, among them is a woman, Mear, who has been hiding out in the town for the past 10 years posing as a mute man. It is a treacherous journey, for their rations are spare and the weather is brutal. And always, they are haunted by the question, Why were their boys in Benedict the weaver’s house, and who would do this to them? Mear, ever resourceful, not only watches for clues to unravel the mystery but also provides invaluable aid in finding their way, for she has traveled this way before and is the only literate one among them. The reason for her false identity is slowly revealed as the villagers are chased by bandits and must overcome numerous obstacles, hunger and fear among them. Brilliantly conceived and beautifully executed, Hayes’ novel is woven through with a deep knowledge of medieval history, all conveyed in mesmerizing prose. At the center of the novel is Mear, a brave and heartbreaking character whose story of triumph over adversity is a joy to read. –Joanne Wilkinson, Booklist *Starred Review*
“A pilgrim tale worthy of Chaucer, evocative, compelling and peopled with unforgettable characters artfully delivered by a master storyteller.” – Brenda Rickman Vantrease, bestselling author of The Illuminator and The Mercy Seller
“Brilliant, insightful, unflinching and wise. This spellbinding mystery will keep readers turning pages until the last sentence. Remarkable.” – Ella March Chase, bestselling author of The Virgin Queen’s Daughter and Three Maids for a Crown
“Suspenseful, page-turning mystery of a mother pursuing the truth… Every reader will come to love the brave and intrepid Mear, a most memorable character in a most memorable story.” – Jim Heynen, award-winning author of The Fall of Alice K.
Sinful Folk is a work of art. Miriam’s story is a raw and brutal and passionate tale, but her story touches the reader because it’s a timeless story – a wonderful portrayal of medieval life. Highly recommended.” – Kathryn Le Veque, bestselling author of The Dark Lord and The Warrior Poet
“A suspenseful and mesmerizing tale full of rich and vital characters. Ned Hayes crafts a narrative that shows a devotion to craft in each word.” – Renée Miller, editor of On Fiction and author of In the Bones.

My Thoughts

Sinful Folk is one of those novels that you are not too sure of at the beginning but once you hit that 100 page mark, you are hooked. This story takes place in the 14th century and is about a woman, Mear ( Miriam Houmont) who lives as a man for over 10 years in a small village in England, raising her illegitimate son Christian. There is a fire where five boys are trapped in and die and Mear fears for her son. The door to the house is tied with rope to prevent the boys from being able to escape. What Mear fears the most has happened, her son is one of the dead boys. The father's of the boys are beside themselves and are determined to find out who the killer is, so they decide to take a journey to England and take their boys to the King to get justice.

The trip to London is fraught with danger from outside elements and also from the small group, because someone in the group is the murderer. The story that is told as the group does not know a killer is in their midst, is that the Jews did it even though at this time all the Jews were killed, forced to convert or driven out of England by the Crown's orders. Mear is able to keep her true identity a secret until to she needs to tell her story to save her life and those of the group as she is arrested for the murders. She is forced to 'come out' if you will, to tell her tale of the love that she had for Edward the Black Prince, brother to Richard II and tell the birthright of her son.

This story is a suspenseful medieval tale of a mother's love and her quest to find the truth not only in her personal life but the reason why the boys, including her son, were murdered in such a cruel manner. Superstitions abound as they tended to do in these early times, of witches and spells and anything the low born peasants are wont to believe. The reader who loves historical fiction will find this passionate novel, based on a true story, definitely worth a read. I highly recommend it.

Synopsis
All of her friends know her as Dana Darling, the clean romance writer. She's never written a steamy novel, not even in her head, but now her publisher needs her to write one. It doesn't appear too difficult at first, but then Dana's lack of sexual knowledge creates writer's block.
That's where her friend Landon comes in. She needs pointers on positions and dirty talk, and he owes her a favor. They agree that it's strictly business and clothes are mandatory, but once they get to work, it's another story entirely... one that's being written between the sheets and not on paper.

*More Than Words is a standalone erotica novella*

Excerpt

“This story calls for several scenes involving varying positions.”
“Okay...so?”
I close my eyes and let out a breath. I whisper, “I've only ever done...one position.”
Her jaw drops and a choked sound comes from her throat. “Get out! You...you haven't even been on top?”
I give a shy shrug. “Never had the opportunity.”
“What do you mean 'opportunity'? You just climb on top.”
“Oh good God.” Sometimes I forget how bold Ivy is until she comes right out and states it so plainly. “Are you blushing?” I shake my head no, but touch my cheek to cover it. She tsks me and says, “Honey, you shouldn't be afraid of stepping outside the box.”
“I'm not. I just never had a guy willing to.”
“Then you need to find one and get to work.” “You did not just suggest I start hooking up with a guy for research.”
“I didn't, but now that you mention it...”
I smack her arm and laugh. “That'll be the day.” “I'm serious.”
My smile fades away. “Wait, you are?”
“Yeah, why not? Could be good for you,” she says with a shrug. “I don't do sex with no strings.” Not just don't—I can't. I'm not good at separating the two. Sex happens when I feel love, not because I want to have fun. “I don't misbehave.”
“You should. Playing it safe is why you're so scared of writing this book. Being 'good' is boring. Predictable.”
“I don't want to be boring and predictable.”
“Then misbehave,” she says with a grin.
