  As Ken backed out of the driveway, Dawn searched her brain for something interesting to say. She finally gave up. Ken didn’t seem in any hurry to chat, either.

  She and Ken had made small talk a few times over the summer, but he never invited her to join him and his friends downtown. She didn’t think Ken disliked her, but he wasn’t that friendly, either.

  As he turned up the radio full blast, Dawn rubbed her aching forehead. Normally she loved music, but not right now.

  She reached over and lowered the volume. "Is that okay? I’ve got a splitting headache."

  "Hey, this is my car. I control the tunes." Ken jerked his gaze off the road.

  "Sorry, I’m just not feeling well." Dawn fastened her eyes on the floor mats, which badly needed shaking out. Maybe she was wrong and he did hate her.

  "Who asked you here, anyway? I ought to go back and drop you off at the bus stop."

  "Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t ask you to drive me."

  "Yeah, my dad did. Except he didn’t ask. He ordered."

  "Don’t worry, you won’t have to be seen with me anymore. From now on, I’ll catch the bus." Dawn’s voice wobbled. If he snapped at her one more time, the warmth pressing behind her eyelids would explode.

  "You’re not crying are you?" Ken glanced at her sideways.

  "I told you, I have a headache," she said, dabbing her cheeks with her shirt sleeve. "I’m a little nervous about school."

  "It’s not you, okay? Your mom’s always in my face and Dad keeps bugging me to be nice to her. If he wanted to get married, fine, but leave me out of it."

  "I know what you mean." Dawn wiped away the last of her tears. It helped to know Ken had problems adjusting, too.

  "I’ll keep the radio down. Okay?" He looked at her anxiously, as if afraid she’d sob into his letter jacket.

  "Thanks."

  They drove in silence. Dawn stared out the window at Covington Center, for once empty of tourists and kids on skateboards. Her mother said they were lucky to live a mile from the Center, where all the action was, but there were only so many times Dawn could visit the same shops and arcades. Even a mall would have cheered Dawn, but the closest one was a half hour away. She was trapped in Beach Blanket Hell.

  This morning, the carousel horses were lifeless and carnival rides frozen. Gulls swooped down to vacant park benches, hunting for day-old remains of fried dough and pizza. Most everything shut down after Labor Day. Jeff had explained that the only places to stay open off-season were Mario's Pizza, the Center Sweet Shoppe and the Sand Castle Drugstore.

  Dawn gave an involuntary shudder as they drove past the beach. The gray tide pitched forward, swallowing the slick mirror of sand. She gazed down at her knuckles, fisted in her lap. Her mother and Jeff worshipped the ocean, but to her it was a mysterious monster foaming at the mouth.

About the author:

Ace Antonio Hall is an actor, former music producer, and ‘retired’ educator with accolades as a Director of Education for the Sylvan Learning Center and nearly fifteen years experience as an award-winning NYC English teacher. He has a BFA degree with a concentration in screenwriting and has published poetry, short stories and fiction in magazines, anthologies, newspapers and novels. Without consciously making a decision to do so, I grabbed my robe and headed for the door. If the thief was in the house, it might be my chance to identify him or her. One last glance at the globe showed the black was now mixed with a lot of orange. It looked like a Halloween decoration.

I turned off the light in the room, then quietly unlocked and opened my door. A flashlight would be a big help, but mine was packed in my suitcase. This was the first time I’d needed it. I eased out into the dark hall. A nightlight plugged in at the top of the stairs made a dim glow and I started in that direction. Moving slowly, I listened intently for any unusual noise. Everything seemed quiet and peaceful. I didn’t think anyone had stayed overnight in the house except Naomi and me. The stairs were solid and didn’t make a sound as I crept down. Time moved in slow motion and it seemed to take forever to reach the bottom. Once there, I began making my way to the living room. We always turned off the electronic security on that door at night since there were no potential buyers coming in and out after five. Even though I still hadn’t seen anything suspicious, somehow the atmosphere seemed wrong. Danger seemed to lurk in every dark corner. I was anxious to make sure the items displayed for viewing hadn’t been disturbed. Moving into the room and closing the door seemed to take forever. I couldn’t wait to get the light turned on. At first glance everything looked fine. Walking around the items for a closer look, I still didn’t see any evidence of tampering. Maybe I was overreacting and chasing ghosts. I decided to return to my room, but instead I veered into the study for a quick look. I wasn’t quite ready to admit my fears were just my nerves playing tricks. This time I hadn’t done the smart thing and called for Dan. He had to be tired of my crying wolf and not finding any evidence. I’d need a darn good reason before choosing to disrupt the entire household again.

At first the study also seemed undisturbed, but as my eyes adjusted, my heart skipped a beat. Someone had pushed the button that moved the desk aside. The light on the stairs leading down into the passageway had been turned on. Someone had entered the house, but I couldn’t call Dan from here and didn’t want to lose the chance to discover the identity of the intruder. All of a sudden my policy of not crying wolf didn’t seem so wise. I picked up a large letter opener from the desk and started down the stairs. The cloying feeling of danger increased with each step. The second bookcase on the left hand side of the hall was moved aside, revealing a passage I hadn’t known existed. The walls in this new passage were lined with artwork. Creeping silently along, I noticed that the art consisted of a variety of styles. At a quick glance I saw pen-and-ink, charcoals, watercolors and oils. I wouldn’t know what all was there until I had time to investigate. Right now my attention was focused on finding out who was down here and why. The passage climbed steadily upward. There didn’t seem to be any side doors, at least none that were obvious, until the end of the passage. Here one door opened to the right. By now my sense of direction had become confused and I wasn’t sure what part of the house this passage ran through, but it might be somewhere on the second floor.

My Thoughts

What is honey? "Honey is a sweet food made by bees using nectar from flowers. The variety produced by honey bees is the one most commonly referred to, as it is the type of honey collected by most beekeepers and consumed by people."

Spoonfuls of Honey is a definitive book on anything you ever wanted to know about honey, from the different types of honey, to explanations of crystallization, how it is removed from the comb to nutrition. There is a section on honey in the kitchen along with recipes. There is another section on what kinds to purchase and storing of the honey. There are light honeys, medium honeys and dark honeys.

Did you know that in WWI, honey was used on the wounded to treat their wounds? Honey has significant antibacterial properties and some cultures use honey for cuts and abrasions. Bees play an important role in pollination of plants and flowers and are crucial to the environment. 

You can use honey as is as a syrup, in butters, and in most recipes that use sugar. I love honey in tea, I prefer it to sugar and honey used in recipes for meat are fantastic. One of the recipes is Chicken with honey, lemon and thyme. That sure does sound good, I think I will make this one the next time I have chicken. Not only can you use honey on meats but on vegetables and fruits as well. Great in sauces and dips.

I love this book, I will certainly be going to this cookbook for recipes with honey. I highly recommend this book for the discerning cook!

My Thoughts
You have been asked to bake something for a fundraiser or bake sale. What do you make? How much do you need to bake. Baking for a bake sale is not always the easiest thing to do. You have to be careful of food allergies, gluten free and whatever else you need to do to contribute to this bake sale.

Do you love chocolate? Most people do and this cookbook has any kind of chocolate dessert you need. From brownies to bars and cookies. Of course there are other kind of recipes here too, anything for that lover of sweets. I have not tried any of the recipes yet, but I sure plan on it. I love to bake and I definitely want to try some recipes out on my family. The book not only has recipes but it has tips on what kind of ingredients to use, what utensils you need and how to wrap and package your bake sale items. With Christmas fast approaching, I think this would be the perfect gift for the baker in your life!

About the Author

Mark Patton was born and grew up on the island of Jersey. He studied Archaeology & Anthropology at Cambridge and completed his PhD at University College London. He has taught at the Universities of Wales, Greenwich and Westminster, and currently teaches with The Open University. Whither Thou Goest is the seventh book in Anna Belfrage’s series featuring time traveller Alexandra Lind and her seventeenth century husband, Matthew Graham.

About the Author

I was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result I’m multilingual and most of my reading is historical – both non-fiction and fiction.

I was always going to be a writer – or a historian, preferably both. Instead I ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for my most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career I raised my four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive … Nowadays I spend most of my spare time at my writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and I slip away into my imaginary world, with my imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in my life pops his head in to ensure I’m still there. I like that – just as I like how he makes me laugh so often I’ll probably live to well over a hundred.

I was always going to be a writer. Now I am – I have achieved my dream.

My Thoughts
I absolutely love this series. Reading an Anna Belfrage book is like a great cup of coffee, when you finish you are completely satisfied. This is the seventh book in the Graham Saga with Alexander Lind, time traveler living in the seventeenth century with her husband Matthew Graham. Together they have a large family with typical family situations. Their daughter Sarah, who wants nothing to do with the baby she bore because of a violent act upon her, son Samuel who is now living with an Indian tribe, daughter Ruth who is married to a minister and then there is David, who has a sense of adventure about him and a proclivity for getting into trouble. 

When Alex and Matthew receive a letter from Matt's brother Luke, who neither of them like Luke, as he was pretty vicious to Matt at one time, which you need to read about in an earlier book. He has requested their help in rescuing his son, Charlie. Charlie got in with the wrong crowd and was arrested for treason and sentenced to life as an indentured servant on a Caribbean Island. They accept the request and they are off to another adventure. An adventure fraught with danger. The Burley brothers are dead and can't harm them anymore but there are still unsavory, dangerous people out for the Graham family.

The Graham Saga is such a wonderful series, very well written, strong characters and accurate historical detail. A historical fiction, romance and suspense all in one! I highly recommend the whole series!
